Schaerer has been "breaking new grounds" in the coffee machine segment of foodservice and hospitality since their beginnings in Switzerland. The company began as a medical and hospital supplies company back in 1892, from which they developed the efficiency and technical expertise in sterilization and disinfection. In the 1920s, their sterilization equipment began using pressurized water vapor instead of chemicals. With the company's extensive knowledge of steam and the fabrication of metal chambers, Schaerer developed their first coffee machine in 1924. The high-volume brewer was used to make coffee, tea, hot cocoa, hot milk, and even bouillon, but the styling and form of this first model were largely based on the design of their sterilization equipment.
Over the next 12 decades, as technology advanced, Schaerer continued to expand and innovate on the form and function of their coffee machine models. By the 1950's Schaerer recognized the potential of espresso to embody the much-sought-after spirit of Italy and they developed a semi-automatic coffee machine dedicated to the production of espresso. When the 1970's arrived, Schaerer was among the first companies in the industry to provide a fully-automatic coffee machine which not only made the work of the foodservice employee more efficient, but allowed the simplification of the process so that guests could serve themselves with the press of a few buttons.
The next step in development was bringing their coffee technology to smaller applications, such as offices, bistros, cinema and theater concessions. Schaerer models were developed that had smaller countertop footprints and lower price points to go along with them. Schaerer grew and expanded into more international markets, including the USA, where they now offer sophisticated professional self-service coffee machines.
